If The Boot Fits by Karen Witemeyer - A Review
If The Boot Fits is the second in Karen Witemeyer’s Texas Ever After series, and so far my favorite installment. I’m not usually someone who enjoys fairytale retellings, not sure why but they're just not usually in my wheelhouse, but I’ve actually enjoyed this series and look forward to the next installment.
If The Boot Fits is a retelling of Cinderella with a Texas-sized twist, the hero is the “Cinderella”, a Cinder-fella if you will. Asher Ellis is convinced that his stepmother and half brothers have been wrongfully evicted by cattle king Eli Dearing, and he sets out to prove it....by breaking into the Three Cedars' ranch house. On the verge of discovery, as Asher flees the house he is compelled to make a daring rescue, after which he escapes, leaving a boot behind. Super independent Samantha Dearing wants nothing to do with the ball her father is hosting after finding out it is nothing more than a matrimonial ambush. Hiding away from unwanted suitors, Samantha spots a thief fleeing from her home, but when the thief ends up saving her younger brother's life, she hides the only clue to his identity... his boot. When Asher and Samantha are thrown together, Samantha finds herself enchanted by the family oriented cowboy, while Asher tries to keep his distance in fear of her finding out his past misconduct..... but love always finds a way, doesn't it?
I found this story delightful and interesting, and it managed to do something that most books haven’t, surprised me with a revelation I didn’t see coming (in Chapter 29). I really enjoyed the two big twists to this beloved fairytale, one being the Cinder-fella twist, and the other being that the stepmother in this tale is actually very sweet and good. Cinderella happens to be one of my two favorite fairytales and Witemeyer certainly did it justice with this retelling. If The Boot Fits is a fresh, fun, and enjoyable read that captivates the reader with mystery, (sweet) romance, and relatable characters. Witemeyer never disappoints.
